The Heart of Hawick Children’s Book Award is now in its seventh year, and none of it would be possible without such tremendous support from all 10 schools taking part. The logistics of getting pupils to read the shortlisted books, write reviews, and travel to events are hair-raising, and we really appreciate your efforts.
Author readings are always an exciting time, with nearly 600 pupils converging on Hawick High School, some by bus, and some in crocodiles, from all directions. For many, it’s their first chance to visit the High School and meet the deputy rector - as well as their favourite authors! And the award ceremony itself, held in the Heart of Hawick auditorium, has a great sense of occasion, with readings by the children and visits by as many of our shortlisted authors as possible.
We hope you and your pupils will enjoy this year’s shortlisted books! You’ll find some downloadable classroom resources below.
‘This is an exciting initiative to be involved in. It will complement the work we already do in school with the children on reading, and be a spur to many youngsters to pick up a book for pleasure.’
Janice Chapman, Head Teacher, Burnfoot Primary School
